Chapter 25 - The Group
I recently spent some time with my best friend. I have known Claudia since we were four years old and we have been on many adventures. Every time we are together we pick up in conversation exactly where we left off the time before and I once again understand why she is my best friend.
I have always been blessed to have great women friends from childhood on. They have helped me through bad times, supported me through rough seas, and have celebrated my successes as I have theirs.
Here then are some terrific books about women friends.
The Same Sweet Girls by Cassandra King - This is a story of six Southern women who having been to college together hold biannual reunions. There are secrets and hurts and happiness and laughter to go around as the book leads to a powerful conclusion.
Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah - Two girls become friends in 8th grade in 1974, one studious and hardworking, the other the "coolest" girl in the world. They become inseparable as the years go by and soon friendships are put to the test. This is described as a book for anyone who has sat drinking Boone's Farm wine and listening to Abba or Fleetwood Mac.
Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe: A Novel by Fannie Flagg - The movie was good but the book is brilliant. This is the story of two women, Evelyn who is in a middle-aged slump and Mrs. Threadgoode who is telling her life story which include tales of The Whistle Stop Cafe. There is laughter, tears and murder involved in the telling of the tale.
My Ex-Best Friend's Wedding by Wendy Wax - Wax has a wonderful way of treating women's friendships and this book is no exception. Lauren and Brianna grow up as best friends in the Outer Banks. After college they were supposed to conquer New York City together and become writers only Bree left Lauren standing at the bus depot. Years later Lauren comes home with her fiance to secrets which change everything she thought she knew about her family and her ex-best friend.
The Last Time I Saw You by Liv Constantine - Dr. Kate English lives a charmed life in Baltimore - the perfect job, the perfect husband, the perfect daughter and the perfect house. When Kate's mother is found murdered, a distraught Kate reaches out to her estranged best friend, Blaire. Blaire decides to investigate the murder on her own and finds out things are not at all what they seem.
